Other Fun Ocean Activities

Lesson #1.  Math Objective:  To measure the length of different whales.            Materials:  adding machine tape, tape measure, felt tip marker, whale cards (stating the length of each type of whale).

Procedure:  Randomly distribute the whale cards and enlist the students' help in measuring and labeling the adding machine tape with the whale lengths featured on the 3x5 cards from shortest to longest.   Display the whale tape on the hallway wall.     Beluga Whale = 14 ft.       Narwhal = 15 ft.                   Killer Whale (Orca) = 15 ft.   Bottlenose Whale = 33 ft.    Gray Whale = 45 ft.  Right Whale = 50 ft.   Sperm Whale = 60 ft.     Finback Whale = 80 ft.       Blue Whale = 100 ft.

Lesson #2.  Math:     "Catch of the Day" Combinations

Below is a menu from Fedora's Fish Market.  The child must order one entree, one side dish, and one drink, but loves everything on the menu!  Using one item from each group, the child must list all the possible dinners he may order.  There are 12 possibilities.

Entrees:  shrimp, fish sandwich, lobster

Side dishes:  French fries, salad

Drinks:  milk, soda

Lesson #3.  Social Studies:  Given a map of the U.S. or of North America, the child will draw the migratory route of whales, and add a map key explaining it.  Child should also label summer "feeding" area and winter "having babies" area.

Lesson #4  Science:  Experiment on blubber.                                               Materials:   two quart-size resealable plastic bags, a rubber band, a spoon, 1 1/2 cups of solid vegetable shortening, a large bucket of ice water, and paper towels.   Procedure:  Spoon the shortening inside the one plastic bag.  Then turn the second plastic bag inside out and place it inside the bag of shortening.  Zip the two bags together so that the first bag is sealed to the second bag.  Then evenly spread the shortening between the bag layers.  Have each student insert one hand inside the zipped-together bags.  To secure the bags on his hand, place the rubber band around the tops of the bags.  Then have the student dip both of his hands into the bucket of ice water, decide which of his hands is the warmest, and then remove and dry his wet hand with the paper towel.  The purpose is to demonstrate to the student how a layer of blubber can insulate the whale from the cold ocean water.
