    This stage shows yet another attempt to make the hook rigging stronger.  The glass eyes and large cups are still being used, but the line tie and rear hook are now attached to each other by one continuous wire running entirely through the body.  This is commonly called wire-through rig.  During this stage, South Bend also started painting its Surf-Orenos with the cups already attached, further dividing this stage into 5A with unpainted cups and 5B with painted cups.
